A DTF transfer (Direct-to-Film transfer) is a custom heat-applied design printed onto specialized PET film with full-color CMYK inks plus a white-ink underlayer, then coated with adhesive powder and cured. The finished transfer can be applied to virtually any garment, cotton, polyester, blends, fleece, denim, and even dark-colored fabrics, using a standard heat press. DTF transfers produce vibrant, photo-quality prints without the color limitations or setup costs of traditional screen printing. At DTF Jersey, we print full-color DTF transfers daily at our Elmwood Park, NJ shop and ship same-day for orders placed by 3 PM ET.
The DTF printing process happens in five steps. First, your design is printed onto PET film using specialized DTF inks (CMYK plus white). Second, adhesive powder is applied to the wet print and shaken off the non-printed areas. Third, the film is cured at high temperature so the adhesive bonds permanently to the ink. Fourth, the cured transfer ships to you ready to press. Fifth, you apply the transfer to a garment using a heat press at roughly 300-320°F for 10-15 seconds, peel off the film, and the design is permanently bonded to the fabric. The whole process from artwork upload to press-ready transfer typically takes one business afternoon at our shop.
DTF transfers are one of the most fabric-flexible printing methods available. They work cleanly on 100% cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, fleece, performance and athletic fabrics, jersey knit, denim, canvas, and nylon. Unlike sublimation (polyester-only) or DTG (cotton-preferred), DTF performs equally well on light and dark fabrics thanks to the white-ink underlayer that prevents dark backgrounds from showing through the design. Some fabrics like silicone-coated waterproof shells or extreme-stretch lycra may need special application techniques, but for everyday apparel (tees, hoodies, jerseys, tote bags, caps) DTF transfers adhere reliably and survive 50+ wash cycles.
DTF Jersey transfers are independently tested through 100+ wash and dry cycles by Intertek without significant cracking, peeling, or color fading. When applied correctly with proper temperature, pressure, and dwell time, DTF prints maintain their original color saturation and adhesion through years of regular wear. For maximum longevity, wash garments inside out in cold water with a mild detergent and tumble dry low or air dry. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and direct ironing over the print. Following these care steps, your DTF-pressed shirt should look essentially identical to day one well past the standard wash-test threshold.
Screen printing uses individual mesh screens for each color in your design, which means setup fees, color limits, and minimum order quantities. It works best for simple multi-color logos on large bulk runs. DTF transfers print your entire design at once on a film using CMYK plus white inks, no screens, no setup fees, no color limits, and no minimum order. Photographic designs, gradients, and fine detail print sharply on DTF without extra cost. For runs under 24 pieces or designs with 4+ colors, DTF is typically cheaper and faster. For massive runs of simple 1-2 color logos on cotton, screen printing can still be more economical per-unit at scale.
DTG prints directly onto the garment with water-based inks; DTF prints onto a transfer film that's then heat-pressed onto the garment. DTG produces an extremely soft hand-feel but requires garment pre-treatment for dark fabrics, works best on 100% cotton, and is slower per-piece. DTF transfers print onto any fabric (cotton, polyester, blends, fleece) without pre-treatment, store well as ready-to-press transfers, and produce vivid color even on dark backgrounds. For multi-fabric inventory, mixed orders, or shop-floor flexibility, DTF wins. For premium cotton tee runs where ultimate softness matters, DTG has the edge.
